Forest management service Lesy České Republiky is calling on those living in the Czech Republic to plant a tree tomorrow, October 19, for forest regeneration day, a worldwide initiative taking place around the world in association with the International Day of Trees. The goal? To create a “new forest” for the 22nd century.

“It is necessary to prepare for the fact that the forests we are planting today will be much different in thirty, fifty years than those we were used to in the past and which are dying across the Republic today,” says Josef Vojáček, CEO of forest management services.

“By planting a new forest to such an unprecedented rate, we create a whole new landscape. We plant forests that will grow until the 22nd century.”

Each new forest is first carefully designed according to a specific location taking into account factors such as altitude, slope, soil composition, location, prevailing winds.

“The species-rich forest provides an original microclimate — it will keep cold and humid even at high summer temperatures and will have a favorable effect on its surroundings,” says Vojáček.

According to Vojáček, there will be enough seedlings for everyone and those who attend will not only be able to help with reforesting efforts, but also cleaning up the forests, building and repairing fences, and trying their hand at forestry activities like measuring timber. Games are planned for families and prominent Czech celebs will be on hand to help.

The forest regeneration day takes place at fourteen locations across the country, in all of its regions. All of the events and locations are marked on a map, which you can find at www.sazimelesynovegenerace.cz, the website of the We Plant Forests for the Future project.

For those from Prague who wish to participate in a reforesting event, the closest is near Chocerady an approximately 30-minute drive from the Czech capital. See the Facebook event here.
