Top Secret Nuclear Shelter Opens to Public

In Brno, a highly classified fallout shelter from the fifties is now an interactive museum complete with vintage bar

Last Thursday in Brno saw the opening of Shelter 10-Z, a former nuclear fallout shelter, supposedly resistant to weapons of mass destruction, with space for a total of 500 people to be housed for up to three days.

The former bomb and then fallout shelter was long kept secret and fell into disrepair after the revolution, but now offers an interesting insight into a difficult past, reports Novinky.cz.

10-Z is the code name for what is considered the most highly classified nuclear fallout shelter from the Communist era (1959), designed to protect the political elite of the region.

It was built during the Nazi occupation as a civil defense shelter from the American and Soviet bombardment of Brno. Public access to 10-Z has been made possible by NGO the American Fund.

The building houses well-preserved original equipment such as a diesel generator used for the whole shelter, air filtration devices, which are still functional, and PBX system.

An interactive exhibit allows visitors to the 500 meter tunnel to play code-breaking games, while bizarre black-and-white post-apocalypse videos play on a loop from a vintage television.

The space also features a retro-themed bar and will also serve as a cultural center for performances and exhibitions.
