Wenceslas Square to Get Makeover in 2018

For some years now, the lower half of Wenceslas square has been (technically) a pedestrian-only zone despite the busy road that loops into it. Police can typically be seen on the spot forbidding unauthorized traffic from passing through.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the area would be undergoing a major overhaul in the near future to make the area even more pedestrian-friendly.

All that was left to do was obtain the proper permits in order for the reconstruction to begin.

Reconstruction will begin in 2018, and the work is expected to last between three and five months. The price tag is expected to come in at between 150 and 200 million CZK.

The alterations will include the removal of the large flower bed that currently sits in the middle of the lower half of the square in order to increase the amount of space for pedestrians.

Additional benches, fountains, and sycamore trees will be introduced to the area. The concrete road will be replaced by tiled granite blocks.

But the renovation of Wenceslas Square won’t end with the lower half. The architects have also prepared plans for the upper half, which include the potential re-introduction of tram lines through the square.

When that may occur is yet to be decided, however.
