SLICES OF ITALY

The self-proclaimed ‘first gourmet pizzeria in Prague’, which has a branch in Vinohrady, is now offering its subversive toppings such as fig mustard, raw ham, mashed peas, and more in a new location. Amunì pizzeria sits right next to Charles Bridge, making it a convenient pitstop for when visitors are in town. The restaurant offers a range of droolworthy gelato, from pistachio to ‘forest fruits’ – which might even be their best offering.

Neapolitan pizza continues to inch its way into every trendy corner of Prague, with the hip Vinohradská street introducing newcomer Neapolis to its evolving line-up of buzzy joints. Green-felted barstools, exposed pipes, tiny lemon trees, and black-and-white vintage photographs decorate the interior of this hit Italian restaurant, which has already earned a lot of eyeballs on social media. Rustic offerings of margherita, marinara, and diavola pizza are served up with a pair of scissors to cut, and fresh, simplistic pasta dishes such as carbonara and truffle risotto are causing a positive stir.

To complete the trilogy of new pizza joints, prestigious chef Riccardo Lucque has opened an authentic Italian restaurant with modern decor on Hybernská street, right in the center of New Town. Farina presents a menu of classics such as quattro formaggi, capricciosa, buffalo and pizza bianca, along with some less traditional offerings such as mortadella and pistachios and black truffle and parmesan. An extensive pasta list including beet gnocchi and black risotto with calamari will delight adventurous foodies.

LIQUID LUXURY

Receiving plenty of worthy hype since its opening in late August, Forbína Bar is the theatrical sequel to the temporary The Era pop-up bar connected to the iconic Café Slavia. Now positioned on Lažanské Palace, aptly facing Prague’s National Theatre, it serves up cocktails inspired by Swan Lake, Don Giovanni, and other classical performances. Colorful and flavorsome concoctions, such as the strawberry and white chocolate-imbued “Snow Queen”, are served up within gorgeous art deco-inspired decor.

Vinohrad Winebar brings an innovative wine-tasting concept to offerings of Czech, Slovakian, Austrian and Hungarian wineries, all of which can be characterized as small or family-owned. Opened just three weeks ago on Korunní street, it is the first wine bar in Prague with automatic tasting machines from the renowned Italian company Enomatic, which allow you to taste wine in its purest and freshest form. Along with thoughtful guidance from sommeliers and waiters, quality cold cuts, olives, and almonds pair wonderfully with your choice of vino.

FLOUR POWER

When two brothers brought a colorful, sustainable bakehouse to Holešovice only two years ago, crowds young and old went flocking to try their famous pistachio croissants and cinnamon rolls. Now, Supernova Bakehouse has opened a second branch in Karlín, bringing its signature pastries and sweet treats to a bright and leafy space in the office district of Prague.

Translating to “Grain Grain,” the new Zrnko Zrnko that’s just popped up in Smíchov is a bakery that favors simplicity and ingredients of local origin. The new branch on Toyen Street is set in the residential area of the newly established Smíchov City. Enjoy their artisanal bread, including their special wheat bread with roasted nuts, and Arabica coffee.

Reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s nostalgic and whimsical film scenes, and indeed, the Grandhotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary which inspired the filmmaker, Foyer Café opened a couple of months ago in the historic art nouveau building by Prague’s Main Train Station. A visit to their Instagram page showcases the elegant, cinematic interior, adorned with tiered cake stands, plates of croissants, and teapots. Live music concerts are frequently held here, with high teas switching out for fine wines and canapés when evening hits.

From the creators of the first Vietnamese cafe in Prague, Cafefin, along with Format Coffee and Ăn Bistro Cafe, comes May – a cozy bistro with carefully roasted coffee and tasty brunches. With vibrant art hanging in its nooks and crannies and unique, colorful drinks, this cafe is a delightful addition to Vinohrady.

SPANISH INVASION

A fiesta of tapas, paella, and Spanish cocktails has landed in Prague 8 with the opening of La Perla de Karlín. Its outdoor terrace and barrel-seating by the bar recreates authentic Spanish dining. Try their salmorejo – cold tomato soup – and come with lots of company to try their huge pan of piping hot paella.

Cross into Prague 7 and wander down Korunovační to sample another newly-opened Spanish establishment, Tapána. An elegant interior holds shelves of selected wines from Spain to complement a seemingly endless list of tapas, from Iberian acorn-fed pork shoulder to mussels, red prawns, and artichoke. Chef Jakub Hirsch has worked in kitchens around the world and opened highly-praised Prague restaurants such as Pork’s in Malá Strana and Hostinc na Výton.
