In addition to receiving the the highest honor at last night’s ceremony—for a run-down of the astonishing and now infamous Beatty blunder see here—this critical darling took home another two statuettes in the category of Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Mahershala Ali) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Barry Jenkins, story by Tarell Alvin McCraney).

The tale of Lee Chandler (Affleck), a brooding handyman who is summoned to his hometown where his brother has left him guardian to his 16-year-old nephew and to contemplate a return to the past and an unspeakable tragedy in a seaside town north of Boston. The follow up to screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan’s masterful Margaret.

A Technicolor-drenched, modern-day musical fairytale in which LA wannabes Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Stone) are drawn together by their need to do what they love. Success challenges their fragile love affair, and reality steps into this dreamily staged romance. The film was nominated a record 14 times.

A film celebrating the White Helmets, the volunteer rescue group operating out of rebel-held regions of Syria, took home the Oscar for best short doc in a politically charged evening. While the film is not playing locally, it is available on Czech Netflix.

As of yet, Fences (Supporting Actress Viola Davis), the movie version of the August Wilson play, and Best Foreign Langauge Film The Salesman (Forushande), the story of a couple whose relationship begins to turn sour during their performance of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, have not made it into wide release in the Czech Republic.

According to IMDB, The Salesman will see an April release in the country; look for Fences this spring.

Films with multiple nominations that are playing locally include the Dev Patel/Nicole Kidman trans-continental epic, Lion, Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals starring Amy Adams and Michael Shannon, and, also with Adams, Arrival.

13th, a nominated documentary that explores the history of racial inequality in the United States, is currently streaming on Netflix.
