While summer is a distant dream for those of us in wintry Prague, there is, in fact, some sunny news on the horizon.

Hamlet Productions in cooperation with Tower Park Praha has announced that it will commence the building of a 600-seat open-air auditorium under the Žižkov Television Tower this spring.

Project developers are touting the amphitheater’s prime location within the surrounds of Prague 3’s Mahlerovy sady, it’s accessibility, and proximity to public transport, while the auditorium’s position under the recessed area of the tower promises excellent acoustics.

The amphitheater’s most unique feature, however, is its roof, a tailor-made awning equipped for sheltering spectators from the rain. The awning, custom made in South Africa is said to be one of the first of its kind in the Czech Republic.

So far the repertoire, largely based on comedies from Divadlo Kalich, doesn’t appear to be English-friendly. The season will open with an unplugged concert by the singer Tomáš Klus on June 23. Pre-sale for the season opened on December 1 at www.hvezdneleto.cz and at the Kalich Theater box office.

The entertainment center will begin construction in spring of this year. Construction will cost 10 million crowns.

The 216-meter-high Žižkov Television Tower is a transmitter tower built in Prague between 1985 and 1992. Those who purchase theater tickets will get half-off admission to the tower’s observatory.
