Pakistan has been severely affected by floods caused by heavy rains. There is widespread loss to human life and property as well as communication and infrastructure. This includes irrigation canals/system, power transmission and telecommunication lines, schools, hospitals, roads and bridges.
The scale of destruction so far (8 August 2010) is as follows:
Affected population: 12 million
Affected areas: 132,341 sq. km
Houses damaged: 650,000
Deaths: 1203
Injured: 1317
The Government of Pakistan has launched full fledged rescue and relief operations and committed all its national resources in flood relief efforts in affected areas. However, in view of the enormity of the challenge the Government of Pakistan would need support to compliment its efforts.
