Prague, May 9 (CTK) – Another baby Asian elephant was born at Prague zoo last night; mother Janita and the newborn both fare well, zoo director Miroslav Bobek tweeted today.

The father of this elephant baby as well as the one born on March 27 is Ankhor. Both offspring are female and this is why they may stay in the Prague zoo, Bobek added.

The newborn elephant weighs 124 kilos, while the offspring born in March, whose mother was Tamara, weighed 92 kilos at birth and now is now up to 138 kilos.

The breeders watched Janita’s natural birth on cameras.

Both Janita and Tamara gave birth to offspring in 2016, when their sons, Maxmilian and Rudolf, were the first elephant calves conceived and born in Prague.

The first elephant born in the Prague zoo’s almost 90-year history was Sita, a female born in February 2013. Her mother, Donna, was pregnant when arriving in Prague from Rotterdam in 2012.

The Prague zoo has kept elephants since 1933.

In 2013, the zoo opened a new Elephants’ Valley enclosure worth 500 million crowns, the biggest complex ever opened by a Czech or Slovak zoo.

Situated in Prague-Troja, the zoo opened to the public on September 28, 1931. It saw a record number of 1,456,526 visitors last year. The zoo keeps over 670 animal species and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Prague.

The zoo, like many other landmarks and facilities, was closed over the coronavirus epidemic for 45 days from March 13 and reopened on April 27.

The zoo management has put the financial loss during the closure at 37 million crowns, while it is expected to further rise to 50 million in May due to the lower attendance as no foreign tourists will come, Bobek said.
