Dubstep has taken the world by storm! The genre has quickly moved from its humble beginnings in the heart of South London to the world stage. The heavy bass-lines and warbles have sent shock waves through the entire planet. Musicians of various backgrounds have dropped their tools and picked up the dub-influenced sounds and fully embraced the electronic wave. Dubstep cannot be ignored!
Fource Entertainment are bringing one of the scene’s front runners, the extremely talented DJ & producer Bassnectar to Roxy on Thursday. I got a few minutes of time with the freeform electronic bass merchant for a quick chat ahead of his show.
I’m really looking forward to your show at Roxy. How planned out are your DJ sets?
Freestyle Mayhem! 🙂 I set up “routines” which are like 5-10 minute segments of loops, songs, and sounds that work well together, but have limitless options. Then I improvise through those routines and layer tracks together in any way imaginable.
How much time do you get to practice when on the road?
I never practice; I spend all my time producing and remixing. But I have been DJing since 1996, so it is a natural experience for me by now.
Do you see differences in the European audiences and the US ones?
I notice all types of details even between a crowd at any one show. And in the US, there are differences between states and areas, same as in Europe. But there are also many similarities. You’re spending quite a long time on the road, so it’s easy to see.
You’re exposed to loud monitors and heavy bass lines each night. What measures do you take to protect your hearing?
Hearing protection (and safety in general) is really important to me. The most precious gifts we have are our nervous systems and our bodies. And the ears are amazing pleasure centers, so I always wear ear plugs, and we always distribute unlimited free ear plugs at my shows.
