Car dealerships in the Czech Republic, closed from March 14, were part of the first wave of re-openings to take place in the Czech Republic, with auto showrooms opening earlier this week on April 20.

But despite the fact that you can now buy and service a car in Prague and the Czech Republic in person, many dealers are taking extra precautions as well as offering new services geared toward reassuring customers with regards to hygiene and safety during the ongoing coronavirus situation.

One dealership that reopened this week in Prague is Volvo. The carmaker says that it has introduced increased safety measures to help protect its customers’ health and peace of mind.

“Volvo’s authorized service network has introduced stricter protective measures to meet high hygiene standards,” says spokesperson Petra Dolezovala who expects an influx of customers seeking tire service and tire check-ups after the winter season.

“Our employees use personal protective equipment, such as masks and gloves, and adhere to sufficient personal separation rules. This applies to both reception engineers who come in direct contact with customers and mechanics in the service facilities,” she says.

Touch surfaces are disinfected before and after service, while the use of protective films is standard. Select dealers offer advanced interior treatments such as ozonization with special equipment or car interior fog treatment with disinfection.

Volvo has also implemented a pick-up service that arranges to pick up the car at the customer’s place of residence, fully service the vehicle, then return it directly to the home of the owner. Selected dealers are offering the use of spare cars during the service period.

All authorized Volvo dealers in the Czech Republic will aim to make the process of servicing cars even smoother by introducing the concept of Volvo Personal Service, in which Volvo car owners can schedule critical routine maintenance, including spring inspection, filter change, air conditioning, and cleaning, all an important part of the ventilation process.

Volvo staff have been trained in good hygiene practices, some of which they have shared with us that can be applied to general car safety and hygiene during the coronavirus outbreak.

  • Regularly disinfect — It’s important to disinfect all surfaces that you touch with alcohol before and after driving. This includes the steering wheel, door handles, lock buttons, seat belts and buckles, window buttons, climate control buttons and other “high-touch” areas. Wash your hands immediately after disinfecting your car.
  • Thoroughly ventilate — For those who want to ventilate at home, you can buy specialized sprays for air conditioning and car ventilation systems. These aren’t as effective as professional cleaning but can help mitigate the risk.
  • Wear a mask — While it’s ideal to drive solo during these uncertain times, for those who must drive passengers it’ll remain important to wear a mask, many of them standard to EU car regulated car safety kits, to help reduce the risk of transmission from the wearer.
  • Practice safety at the pumps — Use caution at filling stations, and observe necessary hygiene measures. Minimize contact with personnel, select self-service refueling stations, and immediately wash your hands after refueling.

Volvo is also planning to introduce at an online showroom that allows people to shop for a car from the comfort of their home. In the meantime, Dolezovala says that even during the state of emergency, all workshops are open, though some may have limited working hours.

Customers are advised to check the opening hours and service offerings by phone or e-mail before visiting the service center.
