Czech culture this week: Rare works by Mucha and a stand-up dinner

A large retrospective of artworks, including some never shown publicly before, can be seen at Mucha: The Family Collection, which will be at the Wallenstein Riding School until the end of October. The show is timed to coincide with the Czech presidency of the EU.
The second edition of Matter of Art takes place from July 21 to Oct. 23 at several venues across Prague. The opening is July 20 at 6 pm at the second-floor gallery in the Municipal Library. The group show has new works made over the past two years. Admission is free.
The first solo exhibit by young artist Šárka Bilinová opens at Stairs Gallery on July 22 at 7:30 p.m. The show has intuitive and experimental paintings that have a sense of humor and a speck of chaos.

The summer 2022 edition of BestFilmFest presents recent hits ranging from "Downton Abbey: A New Era" to "The Batman" for CZK 89 each until July 20. Screenings are at Evald, MAT, and Atlas. Note that Evald and MAT are both small, so buying in advance is recommended.
After 95 years, Tarzan and the Golden Lion is back on the big screen in a restored version at Edison Film Hub on July 22. The film had been considered lost for decades, but a complete copy was found in the 1990s. Boris Karloff appears in a supporting role.
The action film The Gray Man, which was mostly filmed in and around Prague, debuts on Netflix. The adaptation of a Mark Greaney spy novel stars Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Ana de Armas.
Performance
The Za dveřmi festival of mostly physical theater and music will be at Old Town Square, Mariánské náměstí, and Výstaviště until July 19.
Berlin-based comic Dan Belkin talks about his Jewish heritage and life in Europe. he has been at multiple fringe festivals and various shows. He comes to Ty kávo on June 21.
The acrobatic troupe Losers Cirque Company stages Konkurz (Audition) at the outdoor theater at Anežský klášter on July 19 and 20. The show is centered around an audition for an unspecified job.
Have a side dish of comedy with your meal at Manifesto Anděl on July 19. Luke Ryan headlines and Julia Ruth Worland is the MC. Tickets can be purchased online.

July 22 is international Spoonerism Day and also the birthday of Oxford don William Archibald Spooner, who in the late 19th and early 20th century mixed up his syllables. He allegedly said such gems as: "You have tasted two worms" to a student who wasted two terms and "You have hissed all my mystery lectures" to a student who missed all his history lectures.

Rock icon Patti Smith is coming with her band to Forum Karlín on July 19. The evening will be more intimate than previous concerts, with more acoustic numbers and some poetry. The band lineup includes Smith's son Jackson Smith on guitar.
Summer Festivities of Early Music presents a series of concerts from July 19 to Aug. 4 at Prague palaces, monasteries, and churches to listen to the works of well-known and lesser-known Renaissance and Baroque composers, The opening concert is at Emauzský klášter (Na Slovanech) will focus on the works of Adrian Willaert, an overlooked composer from the 16th century. They will be performed by Dionysos Now!
The Queen cover band Queenie will do all the greatest hits at the Krizik Fountain in Výstaviště on July 20. The band tries to create a complete experience, with copies of famous costumes and other details.
Seattle grunge band Pearl Jam hits O2 Arena on July 22 on their 2022 European Tour. So far, they have been playing different set lists each night, with some interesting covers thrown in the mix.
