The Czech Republic reported 257 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, according to the latest update posted by the Czech Health Ministry this morning.

It’s the smallest daily increase in new COVID-19 cases in the Czech Republic in more than a week, since 136 new cases were reported on Sunday, August 23. Notably, the rise on Monday was lower than that over the past weekend, when considerably fewer tests are usually performed; the number of tests performed Monday will be released later today.

Since the start of the coronavirus crisis in the Czech Republic six months ago, there have been 24,618 total COVID-19 cases, 17,800 confirmed recoveries, and 424 deaths.

There are currently 6,387 known active COVID-19 cases in the Czech Republic, one of the highest numbers since the start of the outbreak.

There are currently 147 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the Czech Republic, with 34 in serious condition. Those numbers have risen by about 50% since the beginning of August.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, a total of 1,652 COVID-19 patients that needed hospital treatment have been released back into home isolation, 77.6% of the total number of hospitalized patients.

As of this morning, the Czech Republic fastest-rising and most affected locality is now Hodonín in South Moravia, where about 51 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents have been reported over the past seven days.

In Prague, there have been 45 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over the past seven days. Mělník (39), Beroun (36), Třebíč (33), and Prague-East (33) have also reported more than 30 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents over the past week.

Hungary has closed its borders to most travelers this morning, for the duration of one month. However, Czech residents who previously booked a stay in Hungary will still be able to enter the country if they provide a negative COVID-19 test no older than five days.

Schools throughout the Czech Republic are re-opening today for the start of the 2020-21 school year. Schools across the EU are re-opening from this week, with those in Poland, France, and Belgium also opening today and those in the UK and Slovakia opening from tomorrow.

While students in the UK, for example, will be required to wear a face mask in school, there are currently no restrictions on students in the Czech Republic. However, Health Minister Adam Vojtěch has recommended wearing face masks in Prague schools due to the worsening COVID-19 situation in the Czech capital.

Most schools have been closed for the past six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. See our back to school FAQ for important questions and answers regarding the operation of schools under the Czech Republic’s current anti-COVID-19 measures.

From today, new face mask measures go into effect in the Czech Republic, requiring masks to be worn on all public transport vehicles, in public offices, health and social service facilities, and indoor events with more than 100 people. See our face mask FAQ for further details.
