Prague, April 12 (CTK) – The Czech Republic has 5,905 confirmed coronavirus cases, their number has risen by three since Saturday evening; 132 patients with COVID-19 have died and 422 recovered so far, according to the updated data from the Health Ministry’s website.

This week’s highest number of the new COVID-19 cases was on Wednesday, 295, when the record number of 8,164 tests were performed as well. The lowest number, 163, was on Friday with a low number of 5,431 tests, followed by Saturday with 170 new cases and the lowest number of tests this week, 4,841.

Laboratories in Czechia have performed 120,126 tests coronavirus tests to date.

According to the permanent residence, the highest coronavirus incidence is still in Prague, 1,419, more than a quarter of all infected, followed by Central Bohemia with 713 cases and Moravia-Silesia with 655. The lowest incidence is in South Bohemia, 149.

Prague has also the highest number of COVID-19 patients per population, with some 104 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by the Olomouc Region with almost 92 infected per 100,000 inhabitants.

On Saturday, 442 COVID-19 patients stayed in Czech hospitals, including 87 with a severe course of the illness demanding intensive care. More than one-third of the hospitalised patients have recovered or have been released to home quarantine so far.

The Health Ministry registered four coronavirus-related deaths on Saturday, three of whom were over 60 and one was in the age category from 50 to 59. One fatality, a patient over 60 in South Moravia, was reported this morning.

The highest share of the infected, almost 20 percent, is among people over 65, who are also the group most threatened with COVID-19. A similar share of the confirmed cases is among those aged 45-54 years.

The Health Ministry introduced the obligatory coronavirus tests for all employees of senior homes and similar facilities this week.

The share of those tested positive for coronavirus in the total number of tests is around 3 percent.

The first COVID-19 infection cases were reported in the Czech Republic on March 1. Their number exceeded 3,300 at the end of March.

Last week, the Institute of Health Information and Statistics (UZIS) released its statistical prognosis, saying Czechia would have some 8,00 confirmed coronavirus cases in mid-April and around 14,200 at the end of the month.

The government declared the state of emergency to curb the coronavirus spread on April 12 and it was prolonged until the end of April at least. A number of anti-epidemic measures have paralysed the economy and social life, such as the restricted free movement of people, the closure of schools, restaurants and most retail shops and services with some exceptions as well as the ban on travelling to and from the country.
