Czech Republic reports 6,301 coronavirus cases; no daily deaths for first time since March 23

Prague, April 16 (CTK) – No COVID-19 patient died in Czech hospitals on Wednesday, for the first time since March 23, while the number of the confirmed coronavirus cases has reached 6,303 in the country, 831 have recovered and 166 died so far, the data on the Health Ministry’s website from this morning show.

The number of the recovered COVID-19 patients has risen by 12 since Wednesday evening.

The death toll rose by three on Wednesday, but these patients died in previous days.

Laboratories in the Czech Republic performed 8,332 coronavirus tests on Wednesday, which has been the highest daily figure so far, detecting 160 new cases, fewer than before Easter when the daily numbers of tests were similar.

Last Friday and Saturday, 163 and 170 new cases were registered. Then the figures were dropping during the Easter holidays. However, the daily rise is also dependent on the number of tests that was decreasing, too.

To date, labs have performed some 137,700 coronavirus tests, including repeated ones in the same person.

Out of the Czech regions, the highest coronavirus incidence is still in Prague, almost 1,500 cases. Prague has also the highest number of COVID-19 patients per head, with almost 110 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by the Olomouc Region with 95 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The lowest incidence is in South Bohemia, under 25 per 100,000.

Besides, Prague has the highest number of the coronavirus-related fatalities, 69.

On Wednesday, 418 COVID-19 patients stayed in Czech hospitals, their number has been decreasing in the past few days, including those with a severe course of the illness. Hospitals reported 75 on Wednesday. A total of 367 of the hospitalised patients have recovered or have been released to home quarantine so far.

Over 35 percent of the COVID-19 patients who died were over 85 years, those aged from 75 to 84 make up about one-third. No death of patients under 25 with COVID-19 has been reported so far.

The data from the regional sanitary stations show that the highest share of the infected is in the age group between 45 and 54 years, almost one-fifth, followed by those aged 35-44 years (17 percent). Seniors from 65 to 74 make up about 10 percent, 6 percent are those aged between 75 and 84 and under 4 percent of the infected are over 85.
