Czech Republic reports 6,553 coronavirus cases; 1,183 recoveries and 176 deaths

Prague, April 18 (CTK) – The number of the confirmed coronavirus cases has reached 6,553 in the Czech Republic; 1,183 COVID-19 patients have recovered and 176 died so far, according to the data on the Health Ministry’s website from this morning.

The number of the recovered COVID-19 patients has risen by more than 200 since Friday morning and the death toll by six, but only one patient died on Friday.

The daily numbers of new infections decreased for two days in a row. On Friday 116 new cases were recorded, while on Thursday, it was 132. Four new cases have been registered since midnight.

Laboratories performed more than 8,200 coronavirus tests on Friday.

On Wednesday, the record high number of coronavirus tests were performed, 8,332; on Thursday, their number dropped by some 30. Despite that, the daily rise was lower than before Easter when the number of tests was similar, some 8,000 a day.

The share of new COVID-19 infections per the number of the tested was 1.41 percent on Friday, 1.59 percent on Thursday, 1.92 percent on Wednesday, 1.34 percent on Tuesday and 2.14 percent on Monday.

The highest coronavirus incidence has long been in Prague with 1,545 cases so far. Prague has also the highest number of COVID-19 patients per population, with more than 113 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by the Olomouc Region with almost 97 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the Plzen Region with 91 per 100,000.

The lowest incidence is in South Bohemia, under 25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Besides, Prague has the highest number of the coronavirus-related fatalities, 69. The death toll in other regions is considerably lower.

The highest share of the infected is in the age group between 45 and 54 years, almost one-fifth, followed by those aged 35-44 years (17 percent). Seniors from 65 to 74 make up about 9 percent, over 6 percent are those aged between 75 and 84 and 5 percent of the infected are over 85.

On Friday, 398 COVID-19 patients stayed in Czech hospitals, including 86 with a severe course of the illness. The number of the hospitalised coronavirus patients has been decreasing for a week, and has been under 400 for the first time since April 5. So far, 418 have been released as fully recovered or to home quarantine.

The first COVID-19 infection cases were reported in the Czech Republic on March 1. Their number exceeded 3,300 at the end of March.

In total, more than 150,000-infected people died in the world, while the worst situation is in the USA with more than 680,000 infected and some 34,500 fatalities. But two-thirds of the victims in the world are in Europe, where the highest death toll is in Italy, Spain, France, Britain and Belgium.
