Czech Republic Reports First Cases of Zika

Two tourists returning from the Caribbean are the first reported carriers of the virus in the Czech Republic

Czech officials announced the first confirmed cases of the Zika virus in the country earlier this morning. At 11:00, a press conference was held to provide further details to media.

The Ministry of Health reported that a 49-year-old woman that had travelled to the Dominican Republic and a 58-year-old man that had travelled to Martinique had returned with the virus.

Both had returned to the Czech Republic from vacation in mid-February.

The two patients are both in “good” condition, and the female is not pregnant. The Zika virus is a major concern for unborn children, with evidence that it causes abnormal brain development than can result in microcephaly.

Health Minister Svatopluk Němeček encouraged people to reconsider travelling to riskier areas, reports Novinky.cz. Spread of the disease has reached pandemic levels in South and Central America. 

The two Czech patients displayed symptoms including headaches, muscle pain, and rashes. Those infected with the virus typically display flu-like symptoms.
