Number of COVID-19 patients in Czech hospitals drops below 250

Prague, May 10 (CTK) – The number of patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in the Czech Republic dropped to 239 on Saturday, and is under 250 for the first time since March 27; 40 are in serious condition, according to data released on the Czech Health Ministry’s website this morning.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic in the Czech Republic, a total of 8,095 people have tested positive, 4,448 have recovered, and 276 patients with COVID-19 have died.

On Saturday, 18 new coronavirus cases were confirmed, which is the same as a week ago; 3,717 tests were performed, the lowest figure in six days, and the percentage of the COVID-19 infections among those tested declined to 0.5 percent.

The number of recoveries increased by two since Saturday evening, while the death toll has remained unchanged.

After deducting the number of COVID-19 recoveries and deaths from the confirmed total of coronavirus cases, there are 3,371 currently ill with COVID-19 in the Czech Republic, four more than on Saturday evening.

The daily rise in new coronavirus cases have been under 100 since the beginning of May. Since last Saturday, the daily total rose through Wednesday to almost 80, while it has again been falling since Thursday.

On Friday, 46 new cases were registered, but the share of the infected among the tested rose over 1 percent for the first time in a week; on Saturday, it fell back to 0.48 percent.

The largest concentration of confirmed coronavirus cases in the Czech Republic is still in the capital city of Prague, with a total of over 1,830 cases, followed by Moravia-Silesia region with 1,143 cases. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the lowest concentration is in the Vysočina and South Bohemia regions, with under 180 cases in each.

The situation in South Bohemia is the best if counted per population as well, as there are under 28 COVID-19 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. In this respect, the worst situation is in the Karlovy Vary Region, with more than 144 infected per 100,000 inhabitants.

Prague has also the highest number of COVID-19-related deaths, 91, followed by Moravia-Silesia with 41 fatalities. The lowest death toll, just one fatality, is in the Zlin Region.

Two-thirds of the fatalities have been seniors over the age of 75.

The first three coronavirus cases were registered in the Czech Republic on March 1, the first COVID-19-related death on March 22. The highest daily rise in new infections, 373, was on March 27 and the highest death toll, 14, was on April 8.
