Prague's top 13 weekend events: Strawberry season, hoppy havoc, and child-friendly festivities

This weekend in Prague, May 30 to June 2, brings a stellar line-up of food, drink, and culture events.

RUM AMOK

From May 31 to June 1, dozens of microbreweries will set up shop at Park Parukářka for the 11th year of the Žižkov beer brewing fest. Try the range of beers on tap and dance to live music, watch a magician’s show, and spectate the finals of the Žižkov championship in rotating beer coasters.

Rum-lovers gather at Žluté Lázně on June 1 for Rumfest, featuring a suave lineup of rums and rum cocktails, and attended by experts and brand ambassadors. Enjoy guided tastings and discover your next favourite rum brand, accompanied by live Latin music and pastrami to complement the palette.

JUNIOR JAMBOREES

Young ones will delight in this weekend’s activities, with Children’s Day in Prague seeing a range of events popping up around the city. Head to Holešovice Market on June 1 with your children for outdoor workshops and an open air concert by the musical group Bombarďák.

The Public Transport Museum in Střešovice is also celebrating Children’s Day on June 1 in the company of historic vehicles, as is  Žluté Lázně. The Julius Prague is hosting a festive brunch from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., accompanied by face painting and other activities in the hotel.

PASTURES AND PITCHES

Take an hour-long road trip out of Prague to Lavender Valley in Chodouň, where the Strawberry Feast will be in full swing. Frolic through the wonderful summer trail, where a new permanent exhibition of herbs and naturopathy delves into the lore of Slavic gods. Strawberry dumplings, cakes, buns, and more will be flowing from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Sprawl out across the vivid green field of epet ARENA for a picnic marking the end of the football season. The home of the AC Sparta Prague team will be open to the public to bring their own picnic snacks, or enjoy food from the stands inside. Take photos with the league cup inside the photo booth and recall highlights from the championship season during the "tour de hôte."

If you’re a speedway fan, head to the Speedway Grand Prix of the Czech Republic at Markéta stadium on June 1 and hear the roar of motorcycles reaching extreme speeds on the flat track. Fan zones, autograph signings, and VIP tickets are available.

CULTURAL CORNUCOPIA

Immerse yourself in African, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Mexican, Polish, Gypsy, Russian, Greek, Serbian, Slovakian, Tatarian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and Jewish culture at the Heart of Nations festival in Old Town Square from May 30 to June 2. Music, dance, singing, costumes, workshops, and crafts will spill onto the cobbled streets each day.

LEGEND OF THE LENS

Pay tribute to a photographer and writer who, throughout her career, remained largely uncredited for her stunning work. Exposures, opening at Prague's Kunsthalle this week, is the first comprehensive exhibition on the life and work of Lucia Moholy. Over 600 pieces of her work and correspondence will be showcased from May 30 to Oct. 28.

Social issues often swept under the rug will come to life through artwork at the Re-connect Art Festival, with the opening night taking place May 29 at the National Theatre’s Piazzetta. Artists from Czechia and beyond will have their work on display, with discussions and workshops also included in the program. The extended program will run until June 15.

The team of dedicated cinephiles at Edison Film Hub have hand-picked five of their favorite films to celebrate Edison's fifth birthday. Under the Silver Lake, Loveless, Macbeth, and Final Cut will be screening for English audiences.

The 23rd Prague Fringe Festival has begun, and a diverse number of productions will be running across the weekend in different locations. Don’t miss tales of diaspora and Indian heritage from a spoken word collective at the UnErase Poetry - Stories from India shows, or check out a visual comedy show by a Shaolin monk.
