As holiday traditions go, the annual Krampus Show at Prague’s Výstaviště is anything but typical. Each year, this spine-chilling event brings the mythical Krampus – half-goat, half-demon figures that punish the naughty – to life, with elaborate costumes and a thrilling display. On November 24 2024, Výstaviště is taking the Krampus experience to the next level, welcoming over 200 Krampus figures, including notable Austrian performers renowned for their upgraded, fear-inducing costumes.

This year’s event includes two distinctive experiences catering to families and thrill-seekers alike, promising something for everyone. The Krampus Family Show offers a softer introduction to these frightening figures, allowing children aged 3-15 to experience the holiday monsters in a more controlled, family-friendly atmosphere. For teens and adults, the Krampus Night Show is a no-holds-barred immersive experience, with fiery effects, booming cowbells, and a path filled with terror.

What to expect

  • Family show: Starting at 4 p.m. (doors open at 3 p.m.), the Family Show will feature around 70 Krampus characters in a 600-meter parade. It runs til 5:30 p.m. While still eerie, this event is toned down to be appropriate for younger audiences, ensuring kids can enjoy the spectacle without being overwhelmed.
  • Night show: For those aged 15 and above, the Night Show begins at 7:30 p.m. and continues til 9 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.), plunging attendees into a fully immersive world of Krampus horror. The Night Show trail covers the same 600 meters but with heightened effects and an intense atmosphere, promising a memorable evening for those brave enough to attend.
  • Photo opportunities: From 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. visitors can take photos with the Krampus figures at Marold Panorama. Professional photo booth options are available for those wishing to capture the moment in a memento (suitable for groups of up to five people).
  • Devilish delights: Hot drinks and “devilish sausages” will be available throughout the event, adding to the festive – if slightly sinister – atmosphere.

Participation and tickets

Attendees are encouraged to participate by donning their own devilish costumes or masks, enhancing the immersive atmosphere and celebrating the spirit of Krampusnacht. This practice not only adds to the fun but also connects participants to a longstanding cultural tradition passed down through generations. Tickets are priced to encourage attendance by all ages, keeping it fun and accessible for the whole family.

Understanding the Krampus legend

Originating from Alpine folklore, Krampus is a mythical creature known for his role during the festive season. Traditionally, Krampus accompanies St. Nicholas on December 5, known as Krampusnacht, to visit children. While St. Nicholas rewards the well-behaved, Krampus playfully admonishes those who have been naughty, often depicted with chains and bells to add to his mysterious allure. This tradition has been celebrated for centuries in countries like Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, symbolizing the balance of reward and discipline during the holidays.

Whether you’re seeking a fun family outing or a heart-stopping evening of thrills, the Krampus Show 2024 at Výstaviště is arguably Prague’s most memorable seasonal event. Offering a unique opportunity to experience a cherished Czech tradition in a safe and enjoyable environment, the evening promises to create lasting memories while providing a deeper appreciation for the rich folklore that enriches this holiday season. Don’t miss this unforgettable experience!

Tickets for the family show are CZK 150 (ages 3-15), parents pay CZK 250, and family ticket is CZK 690. Night show tickets are CZK 290 (ages 15+). For the latest program updates and ticket purchases, visit the official Výstaviště Prague website.
