As Prague prepares to showcase its Czech Pavilion at the upcoming Expo 2025 in Osaka, Prague City Tourism has launched a dedicated Japanese-language website. This new resource aims to attract and engage Japanese tourists by highlighting Prague's unique cultural offerings.

The site is designed to reflect the interests of Japanese visitors, from famous historical figures to the city's enchanting locations, making Prague more accessible to travelers from Japan.

Japanese visitors have long been drawn to Prague's rich history and striking architecture. With increasing numbers of Japanese tourists visiting the Czech capital each year, Prague City Tourism seeks to deepen its connection with this growing market, providing a more personalized online experience for potential visitors.

Focus on Japanese interests

In 2024, 53,000 Japanese tourists visited Prague, a significant increase of 29 percent from the previous year. This growing trend prompted Prague City Tourism to create a specialized Japanese site that caters to the interests of travelers from Japan.

Featuring stories and narratives crafted by Petr Holý, a Czech expert in Japanese studies, the website highlights Prague's most iconic landmarks, legends, and historical figures, making the city more relatable to Japanese audiences.

The curated content includes narratives about renowned Czech figures, such as athlete Věra Čáslavská, artist Alfons Mucha, and composer Antonín Dvořák. Holý emphasizes that figures like Čáslavská, who is revered in Japan for her Olympic achievements, particularly resonate with this audience.

"The Japanese love legends and stories tied to the unique spirit of a place," says Holý. "They admire figures like Karel Čapek, Franz Kafka, and Věra Čáslavská. It’s this deep cultural connection that we are tapping into with this website."

Enhancing the visitor experience

The website also offers practical resources, such as a curated list of Prague's must-see spots, local dining recommendations, and options for guided walks in Japanese. By tailoring the content to the cultural and culinary preferences of Japanese visitors, the site aims to enhance the travel experience for those planning a visit to Prague.

In addition to sightseeing, food and coffee culture are strong attractions for Japanese tourists. Prague’s vibrant café culture and rich culinary traditions, often associated with past literary and artistic figures, are also featured prominently.

These cultural touchstones provide a familiar yet exciting experience for travelers eager to explore Prague's iconic locations while enjoying its renowned food scene.

“Prague has maintained its historical charm, and this unaltered beauty is what draws Japanese visitors," notes Holý. "The city’s literary history and its association with great Czech composers, artists, and writers continue to attract those eager to experience this unique part of Europe."
