Prague Zoo to Build Panda Pavilion

Prague mayor Adriana Krnáčová has been striving to bring pandas to Prague since last year.

New pavilions will be built for pandas, which the Zoo has yet to obtain, as well as gorillas and polar bears, which already reside in Prague. Additions to the exotic birds and Australian wildlife exhibits are also planned.

In addition to pandas, the Zoo also expects to bring in Tasmanian devils. Funding will also go towards improvements in Zoo infrastructure and additional projects such as a new parking lot and on-site accommodation.

“I am glad that we are fighting to receive a Panda, a Tasmanian devil, and that we are preparing other interesting things for our visitors,” said Deputy Mayor Petr Dolínek.

While the Zoo has yet to officially obtain a panda – they are among the most-protected species in the world, with only 27 living in captivity outside of China – the addition of the new pavilion greatly increases their chances.

Not everyone is as enthused about the funding going to Prague Zoo, however.

“Mayor of Prague Adriana Krnáčová is neglecting significant problems such as completing the Prague circle or the construction of metro line D,” said TOP09 Chairman Václav Novotný.

“Instead of that she focuses on inferior contracts with China.”

The Zoo welcomed its millionth visitor in 2016 earlier today, making it almost certain that it will surpass last year’s record attendance of 1.3 million.
