Sick of disposable take-out food packaging? One Czech company is trying to fix that.

REkrabička, a company that provides reusable food take-out packaging to restaurants, is now expanding across Czech Republic to help reduce waste.

More than a dozen restaurants across Prague have signed on to the program, including Spojka Karlín, Radost FX, Neobaleno, U Kohouta and more. In addition, restaurants in cities like Karlovy Vary, Brno, Olomouc, and more are also participating. REkrabička hopes to expand across the country.

REkrabička first started their pilot program in Prague last summer. The interest from local restaurants surprised them.

“During the first two months, we released about one and a half thousand returnable packaging, which is still circulating and helps to save nature. Thanks to the positive feedback, we decided to start the project in full and, based on the feedback, to create a new and better REbox,” said the company’s founder Ondřej Širočka to Pozitivni Zpravy. “We produce it directly in the Czech Republic and it is created exactly to the conditions of demanding gastronomic operation.”

If you want to use the service at a participating restaurant, you pay the restaurant an 80 CZK deposit for the packaging, and then you can return it to any participating restaurant. Borrowing the box is normally free, though some restaurants may charge a small fee. The box is then washed and reused.

Each day, Czechs use more than 54 tons of disposable food packaging. The restaurant industry is the primary cause of this waste. REkrabička helps replace plastic and disposable packaging. Their packaging is made from 100 percent recyclable material in the Czech Republic. It is BPA free as well.
