There are some 42,078 km of exceptionally well-marked and interconnected hiking trails throughout the Czech Republic – anyone who has ever explored these wooded paths on foot, bike, or cross-country ski has the Czech Tourist Club (Klub českých turistů) to thank for that.

Formed in 1889, the KCT is one of the oldest organizations in the country. This weekend it will launch a new project devoted to Czech history and the importance of hiking to that history, with a series of walks throughout Prague.

Called 100 Years of the Republic, 130 Years in Motion, the initiative commemorates the 100th anniversary of the First Czechoslovak Republic and the 130th anniversary of hiking in the Czech lands.

The on-going event will offer 100 trips and 100 cultural experiences that celebrate the essence of the Czech hiking experience: “limber bodies, fresh air, and meeting with friends.”

The hikes and events will take place throughout the Czech Republic with the inaugural walks planned for tomorrow, March 25 in Prague, and continuing through October 28, 2018.

Tomorrow walkers can convene at various points through Prague for oragnized “marches” which range from a wheelchair accessible 5K to longer outings around the Czech capital. (See here for a full schedule).

All paths lead to the National Technical Museum where an accompanying program is planned. Stamp booklets for the remaining walks will also be issued. More details are avaialable on the official webpage for the project.
