The Czech Republic is the world's tenth safest country; sixth in Europe

In terms of violent crimes, the relative difficulty of accessing weapons, and the low impact of terrorism, the Czech Republic has been ranked the tenth safest country in the world according to the 2019 Global Peace Index (GPI).

The country’s position dropped slightly despite the fact that the average level of global peacefulness improved slightly for the first time in five years, with 86 countries scoring better, and 76 worsening. 

In addition to Iceland (1), New Zealand (2), Austria (3), Portugal (4) and Denmark (5) ranked among the top five most peaceful nations. The Czech position was impacted by its relatively high level of involvement in foreign conflicts, the ratio of the number of prisoners per capita, and the assessment of security forces and the police.

Europe maintained its position as the most peaceful region in the world, which it has held for every year of the GPI. The Czech Republic ranked as the sixth most peaceful country in Europe.

The Global Peace Index, produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace, ranks 163 countries (99.7% of the world’s population) according to 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators of peace which include safety and security, militarization, and ongoing conflict.
