Prague, Sept 11 (CTK) – The Petřín Lookout Tower and the Žižkov Television Tower in Prague will have the German national colours on the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9 and the Czech and Slovak national colours on the day when the Velvet Revolution started, November 17.

Not only the two Prague towers but also the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and other significant buildings in post-communist countries will be illuminated in this way within the celebrations of the anniversary of the 1989 fall of the communist regimes, Petr Meskan, one of the organisers of the Czech Festival of Freedom, has told CTK.

The organisers have written the Festival of Freedom Manifesto to recall the importance of freedoms of speech and assembly.

About one hundred schools and 15,000 students will take part in the Czech festival. They can attend commemorative projects or help list their acquaintances or neighbours in the Memory of Nations database.

The core of celebrations will be the traditional Concert for Future in the Wenceslas Square, the Memory of Nations Awards and Korzo Narodni, which takes places in the Narodni Street where the riot police used violence against a peaceful student demonstration in 1989.

In 2018, some 200,000 participated in the Festival of Freedom in Prague and 45 other Czech towns. As 30 years passed from 1989, the events will be bigger and they will be held not only on November 17 this year.

The festival, which began in 2016, is a joint project of the Post Bellum, Thanks that we can and Nerudny fest organisations. Concerts, parades, discussions and other events also aim to engage students and adults in spreading awareness.
