A confrontation between two groups of foreign tourists in central Prague on the night of Saturday, Sept. 21 ended in tragedy after a man was fatally struck with a vodka bottle. The incident occurred on Národní třída when what police say began as a normal exchange escalated into violence.

“At first, everything was calm, and the tourists were talking normally. Then a rift developed between them,” police spokesman Jan Daněk said. The police have released a video of the altercation.

The conflict intensified when a 26-year-old tourist hit another man in the head with a glass bottle. “The blow was so strong that the victim immediately collapsed and later died in the hospital,” Daněk added.

Police launched a swift search for the suspect, who was found a few hours later at a hotel in Prague 2. The man, also a foreign national, has been charged with grievous bodily harm and disorderly conduct. If convicted, he faces up to 16 years in prison.

Authorities have requested that the suspect be placed in custody as the investigation continues.

According to British media outlets, as well as an (as yet verified) email sent to Expats.cz the victim was a Welsh man was attacked hours after he arrived in Prague for a friend's stag party.

The family told Wales Online that the incident was a "blind attack" not a fight and that "a French passerby gave first aid at the scene." They described the authorities response as unhelpful.

A crowdfunding page has been set up for the man's family; he leaves behind three children and was also a player for the AFC Abercynon football club.
