Ostrava, North Moravia, Aug 6 (CTK) – Ethiopian-born Dutch runner Sifan Hassan, who won two gold medals at the 2019 World Championships and is the current world mile record holder, will run the 5,000-meter event at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava that is to be held on September 8.

In the 5,000-meter event, she holds the European record.

The Golden Spike originally was to be held on May 22, but it was postponed until due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hassan ran at the Golden Spike previously in 2013. She said this was her first big international athletic meeting and she was surprised to win the 1,500-meter event.

This year, she would like to minimally break the meeting’s record in the 5,000-meter event. Thirteen years ago, Ethiopian runner Meseret Defar clocked 14:30.18.

Other female middle-distance runners to take part in Golden Spike will be British Laura Muir, British Jemma Reeki and Polish Sofia Ennaoui.

The meeting’s participants will include Swedish discus throw world champion Daniel Stahl, Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi, Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers and Croat and Czech javelin throwers Sara Kolak and Barbora Spotakova.
