A Stretch of the Imagination
at Fringe Fest ’08

A Stretch of the Imagination is an Australian play about death, essentially the death of the individual, which must be faced alone. Monk O’Neill is facing his own death with great resilience, humour and even anticipation.

Monk is the last of his tribe, the “small pink tribe of mistletoe men” who have tried to reshape a mighty and ancient continent into a European idyll. Monk is the distillation of the Australian legend. A muscular hero in a pillaged landscape. Man against nature.

Much of Jack Hibberds’ play is the de-bunking of the legend but it is also a celebration of its guts and vitality. The will to survive.  Nevertheless, a legend on its last legs and as the pink tribe disappears it forfeits its right to a continent it has misappropriated.

Monks death is not only of the legend but also of a civilisation that has its roots in the classical world. As man has tried to devour the land it has turned on him and now treats him as fertiliser.

“Stretch“is a celebration of a life lived vigorously to its end, an affirmation of life in the face of inevitable death, and an affirmation of death itself as a fulfilment of the whole life cycle.

This production of a modern Australian classic makes its European debut after playing to rave reviews around Australia. The author has written Australia´s most performed play (Dimboola), the music is by Joe Dolce of ‘Shaddap ya Face” fame, and the performer and director have over 60 years of theatre between them.
