The hetero male attraction to breasts is seemingly universal, not limited to race or culture. But what exactly draws the male gaze to the female neckline and how and why those preferences, erm, take shape has long been the subject of debate.

A recent study published in the Journal of Evolution and Human Behavior “Men’s preferences for women’s breast size and shape in four cultures,” may give us a better understanding of the male mammary fixation.

Researchers, among them Jan Havlíček of Charles University in Prague, conducted their study using data from a diverse selection of geographic locales: Brazil, Cameroon, Namibia, and the Czech Republic, asking 267 men total from those countries to rate pictures of various-sized breasts.

While Czech men did not demonstrate a strong preference for one particular size or shape – medium-sized breasts were most preferred by subjects from each nation, followed by large ones – an overall preference for firmness did prevail, giving shapeliness an edge over size.

Shaking your head and wondering why a respetable medical journal is using science to excuse leers and catcalls worldwide?

The report does cite a biological explanation for boob-obsessed men, connecting the need to judge breast shape with the evolutionary ability to determine “residual fertility.”

To many of us ladies, judgemental eyes are judgemental eyes but, then again, you can’t debunk the Czech male tendency to display certain other caveman-like behaviors.
