April 18|On this day in 1965, The Shop on the Main Street became the first Czech movie to win an Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film (now Best International Film).
Milan Kundera, who wrote "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and other classics of Czech literature, emigrated from Czechoslovakia in 1975 to live in exile in France. Over the past 30 years, he rarely appears in public and hasn't given an interview.
