Expats are proud to present our new review series ‘one for the weekend´. Each month we will present a new location outside of Prague or even the Czech Republic that you could visit either as a family, group, couple or individual over a day or a weekend. Should you have any great locations please feel free to send them to us to tips@expats.cz

Liberec (100km north of Prague)

One hour with normal traffic.

The hotel is a bit dated and pricy; however, if location is of paramount importance, then it will suffice.

Apparently (so we were told by their receptionist over the phone) if you don´t pre-book the hotel and arrive early evening rooms can be had for up to 50% – please note this hasn´t been tried or tested.

The food is rather basic and traditional but it’s reasonable value for money,

100 CZK per evening.

Centrum Babylon is ideal for families of all ages.

Average considering the age of the venue. Not up to the level of modern western European amusement parks – but nothing that should cause great concern if you are used to the safety levels afforded in the Czech Republic.

The venue is fairly good value for money – starts to add up if you factor in hotel etc. http://www.centrumbabylon.cz/en/babylon/prices/aquapark/

“I had reservations about going to stay at an indoor amusement complex here in the CR and when first arriving my initial thoughts were confirmed.  The venue looked dated and had us feeling like we had stepped back in time. Decor and time travel aside we actually had a really great time and there is more than enough within the complex to keep children and adults of all ages occupied. One area of the Aquapark that was a little off putting was the section surrounding the children’s splash pool area in that we found it to have a very strong smell of ammonia. Older style swimming pools can suffer from this given the types of surfaces used and inefficient air conditioning but I would not go as far as saying it was any less clean than any other older swimming pools I have been to in either the UK or here in the CR. Yes the indoor amusement is similar to those that roll into the local villages but what child doesn’t love amusement parks and fairs? Is it somewhere we will visit regularly? – no (because it didn’t wow us). Will we visit again? Yes (for a day visit, but not as a weekend stay).”
