Sometimes there is nothing better than a pivo straight from that tap and according to the 2021 Beer Index, many Czechs agree!

The report from Expensivity.com, an American finance company, looked at the price of beer around the world, how much was consumed per country, and the number of sales made.

The Czech Republic leads the way in terms of consumption rate with 468 beers per person per year. This doesn't necessarily mean Czechs are the lead drinkers, with the survey pointing out that tourists, at least pre-pandemic, could also contribute to the overall number.

World Beer Index 2021 was taken in January, with COVID restrictions in place across the world, so the findings were slightly altered.

"Due to the fact that the survey took place in January this year, it focused on the prices of beer in bottles or cans in supermarkets and hotel bars. The prices of draft beers in restaurants and standalone bars were not compared, due to ongoing measures and closures," explains Luke Doyle from the marketing team of Expensivity.

While the Czech Republic leads the way, according to this study, a recent survey suggested that wine was leading the way for alcohol consumers in the country.

Spain was in second place in terms of quantity with Haiti having the smallest amount of consumption per person per year.

In terms of other data obtained from the study, Germans spend the most on beer despite fifteen countries having a more expensive beer. The place where it will cost you the most is Qatar with an average price of US$11.26 per 330ml bottle.

The cheapest beer is in South Africa, where the average price is US$1.68 per bottle.

How the study was conducted

The findings were put together by collating the prices of a 330ml bottle of beer in supermarkets around the world using online shops, focusing on well-known beer brands where possible, or using numbeo.com.

The average price was calculated by calling up hotels to find out the price of a beer from their lobby bar, or using menus from bars found online and then calculated in US dollars. World Health Organisation statistics were used to find the amount of alcohol consumption per capita and the percentage of annual beer consumption.

Currently, bars and restaurants are closed except for windows due to coronavirus restrictions that are in place. Many are taking orders either via phone or in-person for collection. You can also order beer from the tap from certain venues for delivery using the Wolt or Dáme jídlo apps.
