Prague has a new Easter market this year: open since April 8, the collection of stalls at Marianske náměstí is staffed by sellers of non-profit organizations and vocational schools.
If you haven't already checked it out, the long Easter weekend is the perfect time to do so. The market will be hosting a special Easter program for families.
"This Easter market is not of a classic commercial nature," explains Jan Chabr, a member of Prague City Council. "This market is run by non-profit organizations or sheltered workshops employing people with disabilities."
Original products to be found in the stalls include traditional easter ceramics, wicker baskets, trays, and much more.
A wide range of refreshments, including cakes, cheeses, pickled vegetables, Easter bread, and other baked goods, will be offered by the Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo. The proceeds will go to support those in need.
"There used to be a parking lot for the big shots from the town hall on Mariánské náměstí," says Prague mayor Zdeněk Hřib. "We ended it and returned the square to the people. Today you can come to this restored square to celebrate the holiday of spring and rebirth."
After two years of heavy Covid restrictions, Prague's traditional Easter markets are back, a sign of life returning to normal. Christmas markets were canceled at the end of last year due to the pandemic, though some took place anyway, re-labeled as cultural markets.
Theater programs for children at Mariánske náměstí will take place on April 16 and April 23, starting at 3 pm.
The market will be open until April 24.
