Confirmed Czech coronavirus cases hits 2,829 after smallest increase in past six days

Prague, March 30 (CTK) – The number of novel coronavirus cases rose to 2,829 on Sunday when 160 new cases appeared, the smallest number over the past six days, the Health Ministry said just after midnight.

There have been 16 deaths and 11 recoveries from the disease.

Previously, a lower number of the infected, 126, was recorded on March 23.

The number of deaths rose by five during Sunday.

The Health Ministry has not yet released the number of tests conducted on Sunday. The latest data, 40,700 tests, is from Sunday morning.

On Saturday, 4,326 tests were carried out, which was roughly 18 percent less than on Friday.

The victims of the disease included an elderly woman from a retirement home in Brevnice, south Moravia, where 20 out of its 22 clients and nine staff were infected.

A nurse from the Prague Thomayer Hospital died from COVID-19 as the first victim among its paramedics.

On Friday, there were 227 people with COVID-19 in hospital, while 45 are in serious condition, requiring highly intensive care.

The biggest number of the infected, over one-fourth of the ill, are in Prague. Over one-tenth of the cases are in the Central Bohemia Region and in the Moravia-Silesia Region each.

In the Czech Republic, 81 percent of the ill were infected in the country, the rest abroad, especially in Italy and Austria. Men make up almost 54 percent of the cases.

Almost one-fifth of the infected are in the age groups of 35-44 and 45-54. Children under 14 make up just under 6 percent. The elderly over 65, the most jeopardised group, account for almost 14 percent of all cases.

In the Czech Republic, the first case of the novel coronavirus appeared on March 1.
