Czech culture this week: Music in the garden and prosecco in the park

This week in Prague, catch a free concert at Prague's Wallenstein Garden, have a picnic with prosecco at Portheimka, see '2001' on the big screen and more.

VISIT

Works by four young artists make up the show And Isn't it Really a Hobby (A není to spíš koníček?) at Gallery Art Concept in the Mánes building until Aug. 21.

Tectonic Heat showcases paintings by Julie Kopová and Gréta Kušnírová. The opening is July 26 at 7 p.m. at Galerie Kvalitář in Senovážné náměstí. The exhibition runs to Sept. 16.

WATCH

A film that benefits from the big screen, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey lifts off at kino Aero on July 25. Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

Summer with Harrison Ford continues at Bio Oko on July 27 with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The film was not as well-received as the original but is not the worst in the series either. Oko also has another chance to catch Harrison Ford this week in a small role in the extended "Apocalypse Now" on July 28.

Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard star in Annette, which has a free screening at Kasárna Karlín on July 29. French director Leos Carax made his English-language debut with this musical tale of a stand-up comic and opera star whose lives are changed by the arrival of a child. The child is portrayed by a puppet in the film.

PERFORMANCE 

Comedy is a contact sport at Kontakt open mic. Actually, the name is because it is at Kontact bar on July 28. Come early though so you don't have to fight over a seat.

Anything can happen at the BLR Improv Comedy Brew! at A Maze in Tchaiovna on July 28. Blood, Love and Rhetoric has been making stuff up in Prague for many years,

Sports

The Livesport Prague Open women's tennis tournament runs to July 31 at Sparta Prague Tennis Club in Stromovka. World number two Anett Kontaveit will be among the competitors.

SAVOR

Sample culinary delights from the Mediterranean are at Středomoří na Brumlovce in Prague 4 at Náměstí Brumlovka on July 28. You can expect Italian and Greek food plus exotic fruits and more.

There's yet another chance to sample sparkling wine at Letní perlení on Střelecký ostrov on July 29 and 30. The emphasis will be on small producers. Food will also be available.

Prosecco v Parku opens up the area behind Portheimka on July 29–31 for picnics. People can rent blankets on the spot, and lots of food will be available. A special branded glass is required for buying wine at the event.

ANNIVERSARY

In 1648, the Swedish army pillaged Prague on July 25 and the next day occupied Mala Strana and Hradčany. The following siege lasted until Nov. 1. Many of Prague Castle's treasures such as the Devil's Bible and art collected by Rudolf II were looted and taken to Sweden, where much of it remains. The Devil's Bible, at least, has been digitized and can be seen online. Page 557 has the famous portrait of the Devil.

LISTEN

American singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin has over a billion streams on Spotify. His big hit so far is "Let Me Down Slowly" from 2018. He dropped his second album in April this year. He will be at Žluté lázně on July 25.

The Czech Senate has free classical concerts in the Wallenstein Garden. the next one is July 27 at 5 p.m. featuring Liberec-based group Fragium 16, who like to dress up for the occasion.

French heavy metal band Gojira won the Heavy Music Awards and Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards twice, as well as other accolades. They will be at Forum Karlín on July 25.

Hear organ at St. Vitus' Catherdral on July 26 when Aleš Nosek plays selections from mostly modern composers as part of the 11th organ festival.

The weekly concert series Pražský Montmartre continues at Kostnické náměstí in Prague 3 on July 27 with Jazz band Jazzota.

The garden at Strahov Monastery on July 28 hosts Giardino fiorito, part of the Summer Festivities of Early Music. Soprano Anna-Lena Elbert and accompanists will perform works by Handel and Telemann.

American heavy metal band Slipknot will perform at O2 Arena on July 28 as part of their We Are Not Your Kind tour. the band is known for their rather chaotic shows.
