This weekend saw a light snowfall across Czechia—and with it, rescue operations on the country's tallest peak, Sněžka.

Despite annual reminders from mountain services, many tourists continue to underestimate the mountain’s snowy terrain, turning it into a hub of rescue activity this weekend as temperatures dropped and snow dusted the slopes.

On Saturday, a team of mountain rescuers from Pec pod Sněžkou assisted a hiker who, after finding their lofty hiking goals beyond reach, ended up stranded on the ridge between Sněžka and Pomezní boudy. Rescuers safely guided the hiker down, noting that proper winter gear might have turned the hike from a survival mission into a more manageable experience.

A Sunday rescue proved more complex, involving several foreign tourists whose attire and equipment seemed better suited for a mild city stroll than a winter mountain adventure. Stranded at the summit of Sněžka’s snowy, icy peak, they found themselves in a precarious situation as the cold set in.

Both Czech and Polish mountain rescuers responded to the call, deploying a team of ten rescuers, four snow scooters, an ATV, and a four-wheeler. The operation consumed much of the morning and posed its own challenges, as even the rescue vehicles struggled with deep snow and icy terrain, requiring some skillful maneuvering to keep the mission on track.

“In the end, we transported nine people from the top of Sněžka, but honestly, we encountered even more candidates for mountain rescue on our way up. Inadequate clothing and equipment remain standard for many tourists. We saw people in sweatpants and casual shoes—gear that really has no place on snowy ridges,” stated the mountain service in a press release.

Czechs, a nation devoted to hiking and winter sports, generally understand the importance of preparation in the mountains.

The rescuers once again urged tourists to take responsibility for their safety. "If you're heading to the mountains during this time, check the weather forecast, plan your hike carefully, pack extra clothing, sufficient food and water, a headlamp, snowshoes, and don’t forget a fully charged phone with map applications and the First Aid app," they advised. And, of course, leave the sweatpants at home.
