For Hollywood fans, there’s no bigger night of the year than the Oscars, during which the American film industry celebrates the finest achievements in cinema over the past year.

For many foreign audiences, however, live US sporting events and ceremonies such as the Oscars don’t often occur in the most time-friendly slots.

This year, the Oscar ceremony begins at 17:30 L.A. time on Sunday, February 28, which equates to 2:30 in the morning of February 29 in the Czech Republic.

Traditionally, expat-friendly venues such as The Globe will host an Oscar party that includes a screening of the live telecast from a foreign feed. Going way back, I remember staying up all night to catch the show at the long-gone Red Hot & Blues.

If you can’t make it out to this year’s Oscar party but still want to catch the event, you’re in luck: for the first time in history, Czech TV will be broadcasting the ceremony live.

The Academy Awards will be aired on CT2 at 02:00 on February 29. Just note: the broadcast will feature some degree of simultaneous Czech translation.

Don’t want to stay up all night? The station CT Art will re-air the show on Monday at 20:20 in a condensed “international” edition of the show.

Six of the eight films up for the Best Picture Oscar this year have already been released in the Czech Republic: The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, and Room.

The two remaining films open in the coming weeks/months, with Brooklyn bowing on February 25 and Spotlight on April 7.

FEATURED EMPLOYERS

This year’s race looks like the closest in years, with Spotlight, The Revenant, and The Big Short each garnering widespread support.

My best guesses: Spotlight for Best Picture, The Revenant’s Alejandro González Iñárritu for Best Director. Room’s Brie Larson and The Revenant’s Leonardo DiCaprio appear to be locks in the lead acting categories.
