David Černý Unveils New Sculpture, Exhibit in Prague

A new public sculpture and an upcoming Old Town exhibit makes October a busy month for Černý fans

Yesterday saw the unveiling in Prague of a new sclupture by Czech artist-provocateur David Černý. The towering robot was commissioned for the opening, yesterday, of the Czech Photo Centre, a new museum in Nové Butovice showcasing the work of leading Czech and international photographers.

Located outside the gallery on the promenade, the interactive sculpture, “Trifot”, is like something out of sci-fi novel in both form and function; equipped with video cameras it captures the images of bystanders and projects them onto a screen.

The camera-shaped googly-monster isn’t the only Černý news to drop this fall.

His new solo exhibition, Black Hole, is slated to open at the Dvorak Sec Contemporary gallery in Old Town later this month. 

The exhibit will present Černý’s most recent work, including some that has not yet been seen in the Czech Republic.

Exhibited pieces are to include large-scale stainless steel installations and hanging reliefs which will be mounted to the gallery walls.

With a history of courting controversy, from his 1991 pink Russian tank to the screw-you sculpture he floated down the Vltava in 2013, Černý has also done less political work in recent years, creating the London Booster for the 2012 Olympics and, as a tribute to legendary Czech Olympian Emil Zátopek, motorized sculptures of the distance runner’s legs for the 2016 Rio Games.

An extensive Černý retrospective is reportedly due to take place at several locations of the National Gallery in Prague next year.
