New Prague Film Festival Goes Vertical

This fall sees the debut of a new local film festival devoted to short movies created in the portrait mode

Submissions are now open for the first festival of its kind in the Czech Republic to showcase films shot in the portrait mode. 

The Vertical Film Festival will take place on November 3 in the National Gallery’s Convent of St. Agnes where short films, music videos, and commercials shot by filmmakers and artists from around the world in an aspect ratio of 9:16 will be shown on a 10-meter-high screen.

The festival is currently calling for submissions and remains open to any filmmakers working in this unusual format.

The jury, headed up by Prague-based producer Rick McCallum, known for his work on Star Wars and the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, will award the Tall Idea Prize to the best three films.

Organizers say that given the rise of smartphones, videos and films shot in the vertical format are expected to gain popularity in the near future.

Festival deadline for entries is October 28.
