Great Spots for Grilled Summer Fare

As the temperatures soar we all know how important is it to remain fully hydrated. Along with all the drinking you’ll need some food to line your stomach, and what better way to dine than using the primitive principles employed by our earliest ancestors – the mighty grill! Prague offers a range of options for those wanting to get that all important summertime grill taste for their food. Gas-fuelled or charcoal, al fresco or indoor table-based we sampled a selection of grill options to assist you this summer.

A stylish restaurant with a peaceful, shady garden terrace located opposite the river just south of Vyšehrad. The leafy outdoor dining area makes this a great option for the hot summer days. The garden boasts a large, outdoor grill where you can watch your food being prepared. The restaurant is family-friendly with highchairs and changing facilities (with complimentary nappies!). We enjoyed delicious grilled calamari (215 CZK) with garlic and lemon, served with flat bread and a rocket salad as well as the Rest Burger (185 CZK) a good-looking burger, with a full flavour to match. An enjoyable feast! Well cooked, simple, tasty food, and great service. Highly recommended for shade and flavoursome food.

This pop-up Balkan BBQ alternates its location between the farmers markets at Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad and Náplavka as well as a regular evening slot at the music bar Lastavica in Prague 5. We found them in their temporary home on the new barge-bar moored at Rašínovo nábřeží. The Balkan burger (69 CZK) was a fully authentic experience. Grilled Ćevapi (minced meat patty) laden with garlicky sauces, fresh bread, and plenty of serviettes to mop up the saucey aftermath! A great price for such a hearty snack. For non-meat eaters they also offer grilled vegetables and various pita and burek pies with spinach and balkan cheese fillings.

This newly reconstructed hole-in-the-wall spot near Náměstí Míru offers Argentine-esque grilled goods focussing on good quality steaks served al plato (on the plate) or pan (in bread). We opted for the steak sandwich (99 CZK) which came served in a fresh bread roll with a delicious chimicurri sauce (traditional blend of parsley, garlic, olive oil, oregano, and vinegar) and light salad. Although some might say the sandwich is on the small side for the price tag, we would argue that the flavours and succulent beef do the price justice. Very friendly English (and Spanish) speaking staff on hand, preparing our order and offering complimentary take-away chimicurri after our positive remarks and inquisitiveness regarding its ingredients! We can also recommend their empanadas.

On the grounds of Hospůdka Na Hradbách, perhaps not the most beautifully maintained beer garden in Prague (you’ll be too busy looking at the stunning view to notice), the long-established Gigi-Migi Balkan grill is a busy spot offering a wide-range of meats and veggie options. We chose the boneless pork neck, paprika klobasa, a grilled courgette, and two stuffed mushrooms (total 220 CZK for the lot). The veggie side dishes were particularly tasty, the courgette was seasoned with lemon and garlic and the mushrooms were stuffed with leek and cheese and tomato – both fillings were delicious. The meat options weren’t as exciting and left us feeling a little disappointed. The self-service fiery horseradish sauce was a nice touch though, adding an element of spice to the fairly bland grilled klobasa. A good option for a tasty beer-snack (particularly for non-meat eaters).

This large, well-laid out restaurant boasts a spacious, leafy terrace overlooking the rooftops of Nusle and beyond. There’s a large outdoor barbeque as well as an indoor grill in the main kitchen. The extensive menu contains a large grill section, as well as daily specials from the grill including starters, mains and even desserts. We opted for the grilled asparagus in pancetta with goats cheese (120 CZK), and the lamb burger (219 CZK), both from the specials menu. The starter was a little dry but after dressing with the oil and balsamic provided, it was tasty and fresh, perfect for a summer’s evening. The well presented burger didn’t contain a huge patty, but was satisfying nonetheless. The grilled onion and tomato were a nice addition along with the beetroot relish and side order of chips. Parents will be pleased to find a well-equipped play area with separate seating and baby changing facilities tucked away in a secluded part of the ample and sheltered terrace. The size and scope of the restaurant and bar make this an ideal venue for group bookings and work functions. A great all-rounder which ticks all the boxes.
