Getting a care package from home was once an important event in the life of a Prague expat. Now that peanut butter, chocolate chips, and canned pumpkin are available from a number of sources many of us have forgotten the thrill of receiving such box in the mail.

With the success of Expack and other subscriptions boxes offering a taste of home, a new entry on the Czech market is packing the artisanal flavors of Britain into one delicious gift box just in time for the holiday season.

Šmakujto is an e-shop specializing in chips, crisps, condiments, and other decadent snacks like gourmet popcorn.

The company is focused on supplying expats with flavors they might not find on the Czech market while bringing an interesting mix of bold flavors to the Czech and Slovak Republic.

“All the brands have been developed by small family businesses and most of them are hand-made. Most of the products come from the UK,” says Daniel Dufek, the company’s director.

Particularly rare finds include honeycomb bars and bites, honeycomb candy dipped in chocolate and peanut and other flavors, a beetroot ketchup line by Foraging Fox, bottles of spiced-ginger punch, and gourmet Mr. Filberts nuts perfect for holiday entertaining. Also unique on the local market, bacon jam and curry sauces.

One particular stand-out is Joe and Seph’s flavored popcorn. While popcorn isn’t a traditional holiday gift here in the Czech Republic, those who long for holiday popcorn treats will appreciate the intense air-popped flavors of ten-year-old whiskey, camembert, white chocolate, mirin, chili, and coconut that is currently stocked abroad only at Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, and Whole Foods Market.

“Because of their great look and design, all of our brands are also nice presents” adds Dufek.

The company has a number of themed gift boxes (wine and cheese box, Christmas box, and nut box) available for holiday gift-giving, sure to please anyone seeking a little taste of home or an unexpected treat for Czech friends and families.

Czech brands such as Jordi’s gourmet chocolate and Šufánek spreads are also available meaning that a box from Šmakujto (a Czech expression that loosely means “taste it”) lives up to its name.
