At the Center for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning (CAMP) in Prague 2 this morning, organizers behind the light-based, free Signal Festival today showcased what to expect for its 12th edition. For the first time ever, the digital and creative exhibition will appear at Prague Castle.
From Oct. 10-13, visitors can expect an immersive experience as the festival presents 22 light installations. The festival's main attraction will be a route by Prague Castle, featuring renowned Czech and foreign artists, while the second route will showcase installations in the center of Prague.
Signal Festival director Martin Pošta expressed excitement about being able to transform Prague Castle, a historically and architecturally unique location, for the first time. "After 12 years, our wish has become a reality," he said.
In conversation with the director
Expats.cz spoke with Pošta, who said: “This year’s theme is ecosystems, including the exploration of the theme, questions, and solutions. Using the artist’s perception of their realities, we are trying to reflect the contemporary state of society.”
“We have a plethora of works this year. There is anything from large-scale video mapping, through to object installations, interactive displays, projection works, and even performative works, where we perform with the National Theater,” he also told Expats.cz.
A mix of modern and traditional
Veronika Wolf, cultural and program director of the Office of the Czech President, also expressed enthusiasm for the festival's collaboration with Prague Castle, stating: "I believe that the combination of modern installations against the background of the monumental architecture of the castle will leave deep impressions on visitors."
Two separate routes
The primary route will begin at the Riding Hall of the Prague Castle and continue through the palaces on Hradčanske náměstí, ending at the nearby Kunsthalle art gallery. Notable installations include artist Jiří Příhoda's displays in the Sternberg Palac and a video mapping by 3D artist Filip Hodas at the Archbishop Palace.
A second route will take visitors on a journey through Prague's Old Town and center, with installations at popular landmarks such as the Old Town Square and the Municipal Library. Attendees can also look forward to a variety of lectures, workshops, and other activities at the new Signal Forum conference, taking place on Oct. 11-12 at CAMP.
Key partners
Signal Festival has partnered with major cultural institutions and associations, including the National Gallery in Prague.
"This year's program brings world-renowned digital artists and representatives of the most sought-after Czech authors," said chief curator Pavel Mrkus. Signal Festival's main partner, Mercedes-Benz, will also present an installation at the festival, featuring designer Václav Mlynář and lighting designer Lukáš Dřevjaný.
Some exhibitions will be paid-access only; people can buy tickets on the event website.
