Meredith Monk – songwriter, singer, creator of operas and musical theatre works, films and installations has won a reputation as one of the most important creators of stage art. She is a pioneer of what is today known as “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance.” In 1965 Monk began her groundbreaking investigations into vocals as a multipurpose instrument and subsequently founded and presented a number of solo compositions for vocals without accompaniment and for vocals and keyboard. Her work has inspired many artists, from Björk to Bang on a Can All Stars and the Coen brothers.
