The first heavy snowfall of this winter hit most of Czechia last weekend, with the mountainous Krkonoše region seeing up to 60 centimeters of snow accumulating. Prague also received its first snow, with more expected in the coming days.

Snow in the capital

Freezing temperatures are expected in the capital this week, dropping down to minus 6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night and rarely moving above zero. As per the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, snow showers are expected in Prague every day from Monday through to Saturday, with the exception of Wednesday (when it will be sunny but freezing or colder).

Tuesday afternoon should see the “warmest” temperatures of the week, at 2 degrees Celsius. The coldest weather will be early Wednesday morning.

White-covered mountains

Mountainous regions to the north of the country are forecast to see daily snowfall, with nighttime temperatures going as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius in the middle of the week. These areas will get an estimated 10 to 15 centimeters of snowfall daily.

Daytime temperatures in the Krkonoše area and in Šumava – to the far-west of the country – will average around minus 7 degrees Celsius. Šumava is also set to get daily snowfall this week after 20 centimeters of snowfall over the weekend.

The weather in Brno will be similar to Prague, but around 2 degrees Celsius warmer on average. Snow is expected Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. Snow is set to fall across almost the entire country Tuesday afternoon, but in Prague this will be limited to no more than 1 centimeter per day of snow. The entirety of Czechia will also be subject to maximum temperatures of just 4 degrees Celsius.

A number of ski resorts and ski lifts officially began operations over the weekend. Below-freezing temperatures and further expected snowfall will allow a number of ski areas to start the ski season on the first weekend of December.
