Prague farmers markets will come to a close for the winter season this weekend. While holiday markets were banned under the state of emergency, regularly scheduled farmers markets across Prague and the Czech Republic were allowed to stay open. Some invited Christmas vendors to set up among the farmers-market stands making this weekend a final chance to buy festive local gifts before the holidays.

Farmers market regulars won't have to wait long to buy fresh produce and baked goods or enjoy hearty grilled fare and street food courtesy of local vendors. Most markets reopen for a late winter period before closing again prior to the spring season. We've put together some info on opening and closing times as well as tips for what to buy where.

The market in Prague 6 at Vítězné náměstí, popularly called Kulaťák, will be open Saturday, Dec. 18, from 8 am to 2 pm, and then close until the beginning of March. According to information on Facebook, the market will have 98 stands in two areas offering vegetables, meat, fish, wine, beer, coffee, flowers, gifts, leather goods, and more.

The market at Náplavka will also end on Dec. 18, when it will be open from 8 am to 2 pm. It will be closed until February. The market is located near Palackého most at Rašínovo nábřeží and has fresh cut flowers, confectionery, local beer as well as a number of handmade gift items from scarves and gloves to soaps.

The Heřmaňák market in Prague 7, located at Řezáčovo náměstí, also has its last day on Dec. 18, and will then reopen in mid-January. Tote bags, knitted hats, scarves, children’s clothes, and hand-made soaps are among the holiday items. This market is the first in Prague to do away with plastic bags.

Several stands from a planned Advent market have been added to the regular market, offering decorative items, warm clothes, jewelry, and gifts. This is in addition to the regular offerings of food and beverages. The market should reopen at the end of January.

Likewise, the market at Kubánské náměstí will be open Saturday, Dec. 18, from 9 am to 2 pm and then on Dec. 22 and 23 from 9 am to 6 pm. Porcelain, wooden decorations, wool socks, and festive baked goods will be available along with the usual food items. The market will then be closed until spring starts in March.
