A new mobile app offers a unique virtual exploration of Prague Castle’s most significant yet inaccessible archaeological sites. Prague Castle Archaeology takes users on a unique tour through five key areas under Prague Castle that have long been hidden from the public.

The app brings to light the historical significance of sites that lie beneath the castle’s reinforced concrete structures, spanning thousands of square meters. These include areas underneath the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, the Third Courtyard's Large and Small Excavations, the crypt at St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Monastery and Basilica of St. George.

Until now, these areas remained largely unknown and inaccessible to visitors. But by employing thousands of 3D scans, the new app allows users to virtually walk through nearly 5,000 square meters of underground space beneath Prague Castle.

Users can explore detailed architectural models, view how these sites have evolved over time, and learn about the extensive research that has been conducted over more than 150 years.

The app also features interactive elements that illustrate the development of the castle from the 9th century through the 16th century, showcasing the complex construction phases and historical transformations. Users can see how the architecture of Prague Castle developed over the centuries.

The Prague Castle Archaeology app is available for free for iOS and Android, and supports Czech, English, and German languages. It serves both as a guide for visitors at Prague Castle and as a remote exploration tool, enabling users to engage with the castle’s hidden archaeological heritage from anywhere.

The new app not only provides a rare glimpse into the castle's unseen past but also aims to protect these fragile sites from the potential impact of tourist traffic. With this app, the rich history of Prague Castle is now accessible to a global audience, preserving its legacy for future generations to appreciate.

The Prague Castle Archaeology app was developed over the course of four years by the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the Department of Monument Preservation of the Office of the President of the Republic. More information about the app can be found at its official website.
