This Wednesday, September 26, marks the Day of European Languages, meant to celebrate linguistic diversity while encouraging those who can to speak, speak, speak.

To mark the occasion, the European Day of Languages in Prague is inviting polyglots and beginners alike to try out their language skills at its Speak Dating event, taking place from 16:00 to 20:00 in the Lucerna Gallery.

A total of thirty European and non-European languages will be represented by language schools and cultural institutions who’ll give participants the chance to speak with a foreign-language instructor for 5 minutes (try three languages and you’ll be entered into a competition to win a free course of language studies at one of the schools participating in the event).

The Council of Europe, the organization behind this annual initiative devoted to language proficiency, speaks to the importance of hosting such annual events:

“There have never been more opportunities to work or study in a different European country — but lack of language competence prevents many people from taking advantage of them.”

Globalization and patterns of business ownership mean that citizens increasingly need foreign language skills to work effectively within their own countries.

And knowing English alone is no longer enough.

“There is a need for people to develop some degree of proficiency in two languages or more to be able to play their full part in democratic citizenship in Europe.”

According to the English Language Proficiency Index, the Czech Republic is considered a “High Proficiency” country with an EPI score of 57.87, ranking 16 out of 27 countries in the EU.

FEATURED EMPLOYERS

“Learning other peoples’ languages,” says the Council, “Is a way of helping us to understand each other better and overcome our cultural differences.”
