Prague Brunch: The Next Generation

A whole new crop of theme brunches, casual cafés, and (yay!) bars are transforming the weekend brunch in Prague, once the realm of steam tables and servers in white jackets, into a more casual experience. For those who like to eat, drink, and shop for vinyl at brunch we give you:

While cocktails keep the highball set coming back to this modern speakeasy and tapas bar, its mighty tasty brunch is worth a mention, too—brunch as it should be, with lots of booze. Just right for the season: a pumpkin Martini with a thick slice of frittata or the Eggs Florentine.

For most locals, the idea of brunch in Wenceslas Square is less than appetizing. But this newly opened coffee shop has a lot going for it: La Bohème coffee, speciality drinks like lavender latte and Becherovka-esperesso cocktails, delicious salmon quiche, and furniture that encourages sprawling. (The hot chocolate, though, was a bit of a hot mess). 

Bio Oko has launched its autumn season of film brunches; the next one will be held on Nov 1 (See Youth at 10am; Lost in Munich at 12:15pm). Brunch is enjoyed in the theater and prepared by different pop-up chefs. On the last menu: a vegetarian fest of spinach bulgur with goat cheese and pomegranate and pear tart with amaretto cream.

This new home interiors store that sells things you might find in an oligarch’s manse (a gold throne chair, an ashtray shaped like a giant pair of lips) is an unlikely spot for brunch. All the decor in the café is for sale; while we can’t recommend the melting wall clock, the banana-chia pudding served in a mason jar and the Eggs Benedict were quite good. 

This Žižkov record store isn’t just the place to stock up on that sweet 12-inch—the space is now hosting a weekend brunch. The next event is scheduled for Oct 31 and will be Halloween-themed, menu TBD. 

A new café, art gallery, and social space in Old Town, Venue hosts regular dinner parties with pop-up chefs and twice-monthly brunches. The menu changes according to what’s fresh and in season and who’s in the kitchen, but one thing is constant: a killer mimosa! 

The brilliant folks who pioneered the rustic farmhouse breakfast in Prague have opened an Old Town branch with more space to enjoy their fluffy omelettes, crusty bread, and fantastic coffee. With an adjacent “clubhouse” which is now screening film classics.

This one’s a bit of a cheat since you’ll have to wait for spring, but we have it on good authority that Balcony Bar, opening late last September and serving Champagne and small bites alongside stellar city views, will start doing a full brunch. For now, you’ll have to enjoy their “hangover calimari”—afterall, isn’t that what brunch is all about: recovering from the night before?
