A Prague-based café chain, The Miners, has earned a spot in the newly released global ranking of the world’s top 100 coffee shops, recognized for its exceptional coffee quality, food offerings, service, and sustainability practices.

The ranking underscores the growing influence of Czechia’s specialty coffee sector, with The Miners’ inclusion in 40th place highlighting the country’s rising reputation on the global coffee stage.

Established in 2019, The Miners has expanded to six locations across Prague, including branches in Vinohrady, Karlín, Mala Strana, and Holešovice. The company operates its own roastery, allowing for greater control over coffee sourcing and preparation. In June 2024, it opened a branch in Brno. It has also recently expanded to Vienna, with its opening party being held March 1.

The café says it emphasizes sustainability by sourcing beans from responsible farms and maintaining consistent quality across its locations. In addition to its focus on quality, The Miners has developed a distinctive interior design, characterized by minimalist aesthetics.

The inclusion of a Czech coffee shop in the global ranking is a significant milestone, particularly as countries like Australia, Spain, the U.S., and Italy have traditionally dominated these rankings. Australia, in particular, is widely recognized for its strong coffee culture and the creation of the flat white, a double espresso with micro-foamed milk. The top position was awarded to Toby's Estate Coffee Roasters in Sydney, Australia.

Prague’s coffee scene has undergone remarkable growth in recent years, driven by the rising demand for specialty coffee. The success of The Miners is part of this broader trend, as Czechia continues to make its mark on the international coffee scene. In 2024, Czechia earned further recognition when 10 specialty coffee shops were ranked globally by European Coffee Trip.

Prague, Brno, and České Budějovice dominated the list, with five Prague-based cafes earning spots.

Coffee shops are becoming more popular in Czechia overall: a 2024 study found that cafés nationwide have recently performed the strongest financially out of all food-outlet types, whereas pubs struggled to grow. However, the sharply rising price of coffee in recent months may risk this trend changing.
