A new study has placed Prague as being among the world’s most Instagrammable cities—visually appealing for social media sharing—for New Year’s Eve (NYE) celebrations.

Holiday company Travelbag identified the world’s most picturesque cities for the annual end-of-year celebration by uncovering the number of NYE-related Instagram hashtags attributed to each major world city during the turn of the year.

According to the study, Prague is the world’s fifth-most Instagrammable city. Travelbag found that the Czech capital had over 1,400 NYE hashtags on one given day—more than the likes of Sydney, Rome, and Berlin. In fact, Prague was Europe’s third-best-performing city, trailing only London (fourth position overall) and Paris (third).

Earlier this year, the same company also found that Prague was one of Europe's 10 most beautiful cities to visit in autumn, ranking seventh.

Czechia’s City of a Hundred Spires has repeatedly done well in similar rankings. A little over three years ago, a survey by UK-based hotel chain Premier Inn placed Prague as the 17th-most Instagrammed city in the world and eighth in Europe for autumn.

In the same year, chartered surveying company Stokemont crowned Prague Castle as the world’s “most Instagrammable castle.”

Luxury and lifestyle travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler has in the past included the Golden City in its list of the 50 most beautiful cities worldwide. In 2019 American broadcaster CNN recognized Prague Castle as one of the “most stunning castles globally.”

In 2022, Time Out, a lifestyle magazine, ranked Prague third in the world for its visual charm, applying a scientific methodology in its evaluation. The city had even claimed the top spot the previous year. Around the same time, travel site Kuoni found that—based on Tripadvisor reviews—Charles Bridge ranked among the world’s most beautiful sights.

According to the 2023 World’s Best Cities Report, Prague was ranked 12th overall, receiving high praise for its abundance of attractions and remarkable architectural appeal. This year, payment service Remitly found that Prague is the world's most aesthetic and eye-catching city from the air.

According to the Czech Statistical Office, around 6 million tourists visited Prague in the first three quarters of 2024.

In the overall Travelbag study, Dubai claimed top spot as the world’s most Instagrammable city. New York placed second.
